The creepage distance is the shortest path between two conductive parts measured along the insulating surface or between the conductive part and the equipment's protective interface. That is, under different conditions of use, the insulation material is electrically charged due to the electrical insulation around the conductor.
The UL, CSA, and VDE safety standards emphasize the safety requirements for creepage distances. This is to prevent fire between devices or between devices and ground and thus threaten personal safety.
The creepage distance of the insulator refers to the sum of the shortest distance or the shortest distance between the two parts of the insulator that normally carries the operating voltage along the insulating surface.
