In the 1980s, Tsinghua University, Wuhan Institute of Water Conservancy and Electric Power and other units started the development of composite insulators under the support of the national "Seventh Five-Year Plan". Both units' umbrella skirt materials are made of high-temperature vulcanized silicone rubber, metal fittings and epoxy glass fiber reinforced plastic core. The rod connection adopts a different technical route.The scientific and technological achievements of the two universities were transferred to enterprises and transformed into productivity. Initially, the power running department was skeptical about the performance of composite insulators, and was worried about the operation of the hanging wires. Only a small amount of test samples were put on the unimportant voltage level below 110 kV to carry out live assessment. In 1990, the area of North China suffered from a serious pollution flashover. The tested composite insulators showed excellent resistance to pollution flashover. They were loved by the power running organizations and many departments took the initiative to adopt this new technology to expand the scale and scope of the trial operation and greatly improved the The ability of the transmission and distribution lines to withstand the pollution flash and reduce the workload of the line cleaning has been welcomed by the power operation unit. After several years of operation and evaluation, the electric power administration department affirmed that the composite suspension insulator is a new anti-pollution flash technology and began to apply at voltage levels above 110kV.
